2026 Polestar 5: Taycan-rivalling electric GT confirmed for Australia

Polestar Cars Australia will continue its product expansion in 2025-26 with the Porsche Taycan-rivalling Polestar 5, the company’s local boss has confirmed.

Speaking with CarExpert, Polestar Cars Australia managing director Scott Maynard said order books for the Polestar 5 will open in the latter stages of 2025.

“We’ll see [Polestar] 5 start of sale in quarter four of 2025,” Mr Maynard said.

“There’s a chance we might get deliveries into the back part of next year, but I just want to wait until we’ve got production confirmed.”

The new Polestar 5 will join the 2, 3 and now 4 in the brand’s Australian lineup, the latter two of which have only just launched in Australia.

Dubbed as an “F-segment electric performance four-door GT”, the Polestar 5 is built on the brand’s first bespoke EV architecture developed by its UK research and development team.

The new platform features a bonded aluminium construction and 800-volt battery technology, while also featuring “some of the most powerful electric motors on the market”.

Polestar claims the most potent 5 will produce up to 650kW and 900Nm, making it about as powerful as a Porsche Taycan Turbo S – though it’s closer to the lesser Taycan Turbo in terms of torque.

The swoopy design of the Polestar 5 was previewed by the 2020 Polestar Precept concept, which featured natural fibre deco panels and 3D-knitted upholstery made from recycled PET.

It’s expected the production car will offer similar sustainable materials and production technologies, given the aforementioned materials have already made their way into the Polestar 3 and 4 production vehicles this year.

Polestar has confirmed the 5 will be produced in a new facility in Chongqing, China, which will specialise in the new in-house architecture and will also build the upcoming Polestar 6 electric sports car.

Further details about the 2026 Polestar 5 will be announced in the lead-up to its full global reveal and then its Australian introduction.

After tripling its model portfolio in 2024, the addition of the Polestar 5 and 6 will bring the brand’s model count to five at some point in 2026.

That’s a little behind its initial promised rollout schedule, given the Polestar 5 was initially scheduled to go into production in 2024.

To the end of October, Polestar has registered 1460 new vehicles in Australia this year, down 21.63 per cent on the January-October period in 2023.

The Polestar 2 leads the stable tally with 1379 units (down 25.98 per cent), followed by the newly released Polestar 3 (56 units) and Polestar 4 (25 units).

Next year will be the proper test of sales performance with all three models on sale for the full year.
