3 dead 8 more injured in Mississippi trail ride shooting after homecoming game

Three people died and eight more were injured in a trail ride mass shooting in Holmes County, authorities said Saturday.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March told the Clarion Ledger that deputies responded to a 12:30 a.m. call stating multiple people were either shot or dead Saturday near North Highway 17, about 5 miles outside of Lexington.

March said the shooting occurred after the Holmes County Consolidated School’s homecoming celebration.

“The football team had won the homecoming game and people wanted to go out and celebrate the win, but others didn’t have that same intention,” March said, noting there were no incidents at the game.

According to March, people were on the trail ride when a shooter opened fire into the crowd following an altercation between young men. The details of the altercation are unknown at this time.

March said unfortunately, it is common for shootings in the area to occur due to people having disputes and not knowing how to resolve them outside of the use of gun fire.

March identified the three victims as 19-year-old Shundra Chestnut of Kosciusko, 19-year-old John Jenkins of Durant and 25-year-old Martel Gibson of Durant.

March said several other victims injured were airlifted to local area hospitals or the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“The emotions are running really high for the community right now,” March said.

Investigators believe the shooter or shooters acted with a switch on their gun. No suspect information has been released at this time.
