5 Phoenix-area freeways will close this weekend. What to know

Five major freeways in the Phoenix area will experience closures and restrictions over the weekend to accommodate various improvement projects, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

From late Friday, Aug. 9, through early Monday, Aug. 12, sections of Interstate 17, Interstate 10, U.S. 60, Loop 202, and Loop 101 will be closed as crews work on tasks such as pavement renovation and freeway widening.

Entrance and exit ramps within the affected areas will also be closed, and some lanes will be narrowed. ADOT advised drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time to navigate detours across the Valley.

Here’s what to know before you hit the roads this weekend.

Northbound I-17 closed in north Phoenix

Beginning Friday, Aug. 9 at 10 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 12, at 5 a.m., the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 will be closed at Jomax Road for pavement improvements, according to ADOT.

Drivers will need to follow a designated detour, exiting at Jomax Road and reentering I-17 at the same location.

ADOT strongly advised drivers to stay on the primary detour route avoiding any nearby streets and to consider traveling during early morning or late night hours.

After reentering I-17, drivers will encounter northbound traffic reduced to a single lane between Jomax Road and Loop 303. Additional closures in the area include the northbound I-17 on-ramp at Happy Valley Road and westbound Jomax Road near I-17, according to ADOT.

Westbound I-10 closed in Tempe and Phoenix

From Friday, Aug. 9, at 10 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 12, at 4 a.m., the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 will be closed between U.S. 60 and State Route 143 as part of the Broadway Curve Improvement Project, according to ADOT.

ADOT recommended that drivers consider taking westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 or eastbound U.S. 60 to northbound Loop 101 and then westbound Loop 202 as alternative routes.

Drivers in the southeast Valley should also consider using the westbound and northbound lanes of Loop 202 as an alternative route.

According to ADOT, the westbound I-10 on-ramps at Elliot, Baseline and Broadway roads will also be closed.

Additionally, eastbound I-10 will be reduced to three lanes between 40th and 48th streets from Friday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 12, at 4 a.m.

The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at 40th Street will be closed, as well as portions of southbound 48th Street between I-10 and Broadway Road.

Loop 202 closed for 3 miles in south Chandler

ADOT announced that from Friday, Aug. 9, at 10 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 12, at 5 a.m., a three-mile stretch of eastbound Loop 202 will be closed between Loop 101 and Arizona Avenue for the start of a freeway widening and improvement project.

Drivers heading eastbound were advised to consider using Chandler Boulevard or Germann Road as alternative routes.

Westbound US 60 closed in Tempe

Starting Friday, Aug. 9, at 9 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 12, at 5 a.m., the westbound lanes of U.S. 60 will be closed between Loop 101 and I-10 for pavement maintenance, according to ADOT.

ADOT said drivers should use alternatives routes like northbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 to approach Sky Harbor International Airport or downtown Phoenix.

Westbound U.S. 60 on-ramps at Alma School and Dobson roads also will be closed, according to ADOT.

Northbound Loop 101 closed in Scottsdale

Starting Friday, Aug. 9, at 10 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 12, at 5 a.m., northbound Loop 101 will be closed at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard for bridge work, according to ADOT.

ADOT suggested drivers detour the Loop 101 at the closure by exiting onto the northbound frontage road to the next Loop 101 on-ramp at Princess Drive/Pima Road.

Northbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Shea Boulevard, Cactus Road and Raintree Drive also will be closed, according to ADOT.

Northbound SR 51 narrowed to one lane

From Friday, Aug. 9, at 9 p.m. until Saturday, Aug. 10, at noon, the northbound lanes of State Route 51 will be reduced to one lane between Glendale Avenue and Shea Boulevard for pavement maintenance, according to ADOT.

Drivers heading north were encouraged to use Seventh Street, northbound Cave Creek Road, and eastbound Cactus Road as alternative routes.

The SR 51 on-ramps at Glendale and Northern Avenues will also be closed, and ADOT advised drivers to allow extra time for their commute.

Ramp and road closures in Phoenix

ADOT announced that the eastbound I-10 off-ramp at 48th Street and State Route 143 will be closed from Friday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m. until late fall for work on the Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

Drivers were advised to use alternate routes, such as the eastbound I-10 exit at Broadway Road.

Additionally, beginning Friday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m. and continuing through September, northbound 48th Street between Broadway Road and I-10 will be closed.
