7 Days to Die Blood Moons Explained

7 Days to Die presents all manner of challenges for newcomers and veteran survival gaming fans alike. From the untold zombie masses trapped inside a seemingly abandoned and innocent residential home to the timely yet drastically more difficult Blood Moon Hordes. Here’s what you should know about 7 Days to Die Blood Moons!

What is the Blood Moon in 7 Days to Die?

Whether you’re brand-new to the game or have spent the last few years shuffling about the map in 7 Days to Die, Blood Moons instill fear. They’re drastically more challenging than your usual zombie horde, but they appear like clockwork. After all, that’s the name of the game. You have seven days to build up your defenses, craft powerful weapons, and equip armor to survive the horde.

By default, Blood Moons occur every 7 days, but you can alter this value in the game’s settings to make them more or less frequent. If you’re a new player, there’s no shame in pushing the Blood Moon back a few days, though we do recommend leaving it on altogether. It’s a unique challenge and a major focal point of the game.

The way Blood Moons work in 7 Days to Die is, upon reaching the one-week spawn trigger, the event will vary the number of zombies and their overall strength depending on your Game Stage. Game Stage is a fancy piece of terminology that compiles your player level, number of days alive, and the difficulty setting you select when starting a new game. The higher your level, the longer you’ve survived, and the higher the game difficulty, the stronger the Blood Moon Horde!

It’s important to note that the Blood Moon Horde actively seeks you out. They don’t just randomly spawn on the map and wait for you to encounter them accidentally. They’ll spawn, then beeline for your base to attack everything on sight!

How to Survive Blood Moons in 7 Days to Die

Here are a few valuable tips to help you survive Blood Moons in 7 Days to Die:

  • Stock up on ammunition and throwables (Molotovs!), and ensure you’re wearing armor. I can’t tell you the number of times I survived until the Blood Moon while forgetting to upgrade my armor!
  • Construct a separate horde base and, immediately before the Blood Moon, head there to shore up the defenses and survive the night. The horde will assault your secondary base, leaving your main—more valuable base—intact!
  • Don’t be afraid to use existing structures for your base. If you can find a tall building with easily defensible points of entry, shore up the defenses and survive the night. You can funnel zombies into a stairwell, for example, and take them down relatively easily!

Overall, the key to surviving Blood Moons in 7 Days to Die is persistence and preparation. The better off you are in your main base, the more likely you are to survive. It also helps to bring along a friend or two to stave off the undead hordes!

But don’t sleep through the Blood Moon, as they’ll still attack your base!
