Man throws brick at Piedmont Brewery. Manager calls for better mental health services

Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen in downtown Macon closed early Thursday after a man threw a brick through the front window, according to a restaurant manager.

Kory Poss, the restaurant manager, said the brick left a hole in the window with glass scattered behind the host stand. The brick narrowly missed the hosts and no one was injured.

“They were kind of standing right there when the brick was thrown,” Poss said. “Thankfully it didn’t go and hit anybody.”

It wasn’t the first time Poss had seen the man outside of the restaurant on Third St. and Cherry St. Lane, but the incident was unusual, he said.

“We have bystanders and stuff like that, but I don’t know what the issue was to be honest,” Poss said. “This guy has been around a couple of times, but he threw the brick and took off.”

Customers and employees chased the suspect on foot through the Dunlap Park median toward an alley on Cherry St. Lane, but lost him before deputies arrived, Poss told The Telegraph.

It is unclear whether the suspect was arrested as of Friday evening.

A wood panel covered the broken window Friday, which Poss worried would deter customers from coming inside. The restaurant reopened Friday as usual.

The restaurant posted a photo of the storefront on Instagram with the caption, “#meanpeoplesuck.”

One user commented “Macon makes itself hard to love sometimes.”

The restaurant responded, “This happens everywhere. I just wish we had better mental health care for the displaced.”

Poss recalled a previous conversation with the man who, he said, was mad at a local church, not affiliated with Piedmont.

“I think it was somebody who had misdirected their anger at something we had nothing to do with,” Poss said. “I do think we should have a better program for mentally ill patients.”

Poss was unsure how much money it would take to fix the window, but it could take about a month to repair.

An incident report was filed with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
