Editorial: A moment for us all to stop and rethink
There was a certain tragic inevitability to the assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump. American politics has been in a long descent into the realm of the absurd, facilitated by the out-of-control, unregulated dominance of malevolent social media, its unhinged and unreliable influence on public discourse coupled with the hysteria of the hyper-partisan politics in America’s myopic mainstream media.
Trump is obviously not the the first political leader to face an assassin’s bullet. Thankfully, he is one of the rare ones to survive. Serving presidents have been killed in office, and popular presidential candidates have been cut down. It’s incomprehensible for Australians. American politics has long been the theatre of the surreal. The legal pursuit of Trump by his rivals and haters, and the public demise of Joe Biden, along with the Democrats’ denial, has become a head-scratching comical distraction for the rest of the world.
