GNFL clubs join forces with Valhalla MMA Gym to boost tackling skills in women’s sides

On the surface, the worlds of Australian rules footy and mixed martial arts seem far removed.

But perhaps not as much as you would expect, with local footy clubs joining forces with an MMA gym to boost their women’s teams’ tackling prowess.

MMA techniques have been integrated into the training regimen of the participating clubs, thanks to the expertise of Valhalla MMA Gym coach Ollie Murray.

Players have learnt to master new ways to tackle and control their opponents. Murray had a revelation while watching his daughter play junior football.

“I realised that tackling in footy and takedowns in MMA are essentially the same thing,” he said. “Both involve connecting to a resisting opponent in order to get them to the ground. While the two may not always look similar due to different rule sets, the underlying mechanics are the same.”

Murray has more than 25 years of experience in training and teaching takedowns in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. This expertise led him to re-evaluate traditional tackling techniques and devise a system focused on the essential skills of connecting with the ground, engaging a resisting opponent and neutralising tackles.

Murray’s innovative approach quickly gained traction among local footy clubs. He invited several teams to Valhalla MMA for tackle coaching sessions. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with three teams seizing the opportunity and one even returning for a second session.

“I’m keen to work with other teams to improve tackling and tackle coaching in Geraldton,” Murray said.

Chapman Valley’s involvement was driven by women’s coach Jake Hipper. Inspired by AFL stars incorporating tackle sessions into their training, Hipper saw the potential benefits for his team.

“I thought it would be a great idea to teach the women’s team,” he said.

The sessions with Valhalla MMA have been a hit among the players.

Experienced Royals player Taylah Broadhurst said: “I loved the confidence it gave me leading into the game. It’s hard to push yourself to attempt to take on or break tackles during a game, but it’s something I’ve wanted to try more of.

“I felt this session gave me a few handy skills to focus on and implant during a game to give me the extra advantage and know how to do so.”

Rovers and Brigades are other GNFL clubs that have participated in the unconventional training.

Murray and Hipper are both enthusiastic about the possibilities provided by the blending of disciplines, which proves effective strategies can come from unexpected places.

There are plans to extend the program to more teams in Geraldton and beyond.
