Kimberley misses out on Federal funding for safe houses despite high rates of domestic violence

The Kimberley has missed out on a share of $100m in Federal funding to build new safe houses for women and children fleeing domestic violence even though rates of family assaults in the north west are more than ten times the State average.

One community to miss out was the desert town of Balgo where almost weekly the town’s two police officers have to leave their posts to escort vulnerable women on an eight-hour round trip to Halls Creek — the closest safe house
