Ed Boon Teases Huge Mortal Kombat 1 Surprise in Store for Fans

At this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Mortal Kombat 1 director Ed Boon dropped some major hints about what’s coming next for the franchise. Fans will be pleased to learn that there’s a lot to be excited about.

Boon made it clear that the journey is far from over. Mortal Kombat 1 has more surprises lined up, and the upcoming years will be packed with new content, including new playable characters and crossovers.

The Future of Mortal Kombat 1

Boon revealed that Year 2 of Mortal Kombat 1 won’t be the end of the road. There are more years of content planned, so players can expect continuous updates and new features. This approach definitely shows a commitment to keeping the game fresh and engaging for the community for a longer time period, akin to other live service games.

Older Mortal Kombat games would usually last two years after which new content and characters would stop coming, but the latest entry in the franchise seems to have been granted a longer lifecycle. With each year, players can look forward to new characters, stages, and cosmetics that will ideally keep them coming back for more.

One of the standout revelations from the interview was the introduction of Havik (Chaos) versions of multiple characters in the story mode. Havik is known for his anarchistic philosophy and unpredictable nature. Introducing Havik versions of characters adds something fresh to the game’s narrative. Fans can expect to see their favorite fighters with a chaotic twist and visual differences.

Additionally, Boon hinted at a massive Easter egg hidden within the game, reminiscent of how Reptile was secretly included in Mortal Kombat 3. This has started a wave of speculation among fans. The idea of discovering a hidden character or storyline element definitely adds a lot of intrigue to the game since fans are now scrambling to find the secret.

The Next Mortal Kombat Game Will Use Unreal Engine 5

Looking further ahead, Boon mentioned that the next game will utilize Unreal Engine 5, or possibly Unreal Engine 6 if it comes out by that time. This is a significant step forward in terms of graphics and performance. Unreal Engine 5 is renowned for its cutting-edge technology, offering hyper-realistic graphics and other features such as Lumen and Nanite.

For the franchise, this means even more detailed character models, lifelike environments, and smoother animations, although Mortal Kombat 1 is already stunning as it is.

This leap in technology to UE5 will likely bring the next installment of the series to a whole new level. The developers will probably have more tools at their disposal to create a more immersive and dynamic fighting experience.

Mortal Kombat 1 has already made waves in the gaming community with its return to form, focusing on classic characters and brutal gameplay. The game has been praised for its detailed graphics, smooth and brutal combat mechanics and animations, and a pretty good story mode.

Most recently, Kombat Pack 1 introduced three fan-favorite characters to the game – Peacemaker from the DC Universe, Homelander from The Boys, and Omni-Man from Invincible. Are you looking forward to the recently announced Kombat Pack 2? Let us know in the comments.
