Las Vegas man stealing groceries shoots security guard: police

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man faces several charges, including attempted murder, after he allegedly shot a security guard while stealing groceries from a supermarket, documents said.

On Saturday, July 20 at around 1 p.m., police were called to a supermarket in the 800 block of North Decatur Boulevard near Washington Avenue after a report of a shooting.

Arriving officers found a security guard suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Medical personnel took the victim to a nearby hospital where he was last listed in critical condition. Police do not know if the victim will survive his injuries or what the quality of his life would be should he survive, according to an arrest report.

Witnesses at the scene told police that a man entered the supermarket, filled a shopping cart with groceries, and left the store without paying. Employees at the store alerted the security guard who went outside to confront the man, who was loading the stolen items into a vehicle, the report said.

During an argument between the security guard and the man, a second person exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at the security guard, who deployed his pepper spray at them to defend himself.

The suspect shot multiple times at the security guard, hitting him in the chin, likely lodging in his neck, according to the report. The two men then got into the vehicle and drove away from the scene.

Using witness statements, police were able to identify the registered owner of the suspect vehicle, who told police their son, Miguel Narro, 36, was last driving the car.

Narro matched the description of one of the suspects given by witnesses, the report stated. A records check showed Narro was previously arrested for attempted murder, among other violent felony offenses.

The next day, corrections officers were conducting a home compliance check when they saw two men in the backyard of the house arrest offender, one who was attempting to climb over the fence, the report stated.

Officers asked the men to identify themselves by name, date of birth, and social security number, which is routine for corrections officers checking on house arrest offenders, as they are not supposed to associate with known felons or ex-felons who are not immediate family. One of the men identified himself as Narro. Because there was an active warrant for Narro, officers arrested him.

While searching Narro’s home, police found the suspect vehicle from the shooting. The vehicle still had dry pepper spray on it, which caused crime scene analysts and a detective to suffer effects from it, including irritated throats, eyes, and noses, according to the report.

Narro told police he believed his vehicle was stolen during the early morning hours of July 20 and he spent the day looking for it. When shown surveillance video of the vehicle from the shooting, he told police it was not the vehicle he drove.

The interview ended when Narro asked for a lawyer after police told him they found the vehicle at his residence.

Police took Narro to the Clark County Detention Center, where he faces charges of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, owning/possessing a gun by a prohibited person, robbery with the use of a deadly weapon, battery with the use of a deadly weapon, and discharging a gun into an occupied structure or vehicle.

Narro is held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31.
