Kings Canyon fire mapped at over 200 acres
MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — Difficult, steep inaccessible terrain has presented a challenge in suppressing the Kings Canyon fire, according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit (UCRIFHM).
The unit said Monday the conditions have led around 10% of the Kings Canyon fire to be contained and has been mapped at 213 acres. Kings Canyon is about 15 miles southwest of Fruita.
“Smoke will be visible for the next few days as resources further strengthen containment lines and additional resources arrive,” according to UCRIFHM.
The fire grew around 161 acres on Sunday. A Type 3 helicopter, one large airtanker, four single engine airtanker, multiple engines and a Type 2 hand crew have attacked the blaze.
The fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management lands. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Glade Park Fire and Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control assisted with the fire.
