WA weather: South West & Perth residents told to expect strong winds, heavy rainfall as cold front approaches

West Aussies are being told to expect damaging wings strong enough to bring down trees and heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding in the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology is likely to issue weather warnings on Tuesday afternoon as a strong winter cold front approaches the State.

Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said the cold front will bring wet and blustery weather.

“The front itself is expected to approach through Wednesday morning,” Bradbury said.

“We’ll see a few scattered showers developing across the South West land division through the early part of Wednesday afternoon, really starting to ramp up as the afternoon goes on, with the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms as well.

“The strongest winds and heaviest rain will be tied to the front itself, likely to reach the southwest coast through the afternoon, pushing towards Perth by around 10 pm or so.”

Bradbury said the front will bring widespread rain, isolated thunderstorms and the risk of damaging winds and heavy fall.

“Now, damaging winds are strong enough to bring down trees or powerlines, potentially leading to dangerous driving conditions.

“Heavy rainfall may be more isolated, but if it’s heavy enough, it could produce flash flooding, which likewise could impact roads and access routes.”

The weather event is expected to continue into Thursday as it moves towards the South Australian border, brining more rain, storms and the chance of small hail stones persisting into early Friday.

A warning to sheep graziers in the Lower West and South West regions has already been issued, with the Bureau of Meteorolgy warning the condition could cause the death of lambs and sheep.
