Vehicle traveling 82 MPH in 45 MPH zone before life-threatening crash: police

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police documents recounted the aftermath of a collision that left one person with severe injuries on July 19 at the intersection of Decatur Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue in south Las Vegas.

According to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrest report, a midsize vehicle and sedan collided when the midsize vehicle took a left turn against a red traffic turn arrow, striking the sedan. The resulting crash sent the midsize vehicle on a collision course with a woman who was on foot in the area. She suffered a spinal fracture as well as a brain bleed, which required emergency surgery.

Witness testimony, dash camera video, and data from the vehicle’s airbag control module indicated that the sedan had been traveling at 82 miles per hour in the marked 45-per-hour zone moments before the collision, the report said. The sedan’s driver, identified as Michael Woods, surrendered to police and faces charges related to reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm.

When officers arrived, the report indicated that Jessica Carreon, the driver of the midsize vehicle, was unconscious and transported to an area hospital for treatment. She pleaded nolo contendere, in which a defendant doesn’t admit guilt but does accept conviction as though a guilty verdict has been received, for failure to obey traffic control devices and was released on time served.

Woods faces two counts of felony reckless driving. He has since posted bond and is due in court for a status check on Aug. 27.

The woman who was injured on foot when the midsize vehicle crashed into her was not carrying identification, and her injury status was not updated by LVMPD officials.
