West Coast Eagles assistant coach Matthew Knights to depart club at end of 2024 season

West Coast’s coaching staff is set for more change with forwards coach Matthew Knights informing the club he won’t seek a contract extension beyond this season.

Knights, who joined the Eagles from Geelong before the 2022 season, has told the Eagles he will return to Victoria for family and lifestyle reasons.

The former Essendon head coach was in charge of the Eagles midfield before he took over as the forwards coach this season.

He also coached the Eagles against Brisbane in 2022 after former senior coach Adam Simpson was forced to miss after entering COVID-19 protocols.

Knights will continue until the end of the season to support interim coach Jarrad Schofield.

“’Knighta’ has been an invaluable member of our team, known for his passion and the strong relationships he built with players and staff alike,” Eagles football boss Gavin Bell said.

“His contributions have greatly impacted our program and he will be missed. While it would have been nice to retain him at the club we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

It comes after the Eagles parted ways with Simpson earlier this month after an 11-year tenure.
