Cathedral City eatery remains closed; another score ‘B’ grade
One Cathedral City restaurant remains closed while another scored a “B” grade due to a number of violations, according to this week’s Riverside County health inspection reports.
Tacos Del Valle in Cathedral City was revisited by inspectors following a recent failed inspection. Because violations were not corrected during the repeat visit, the facility remains closed. A second reinspection will take place.
Michael’s Cafe in Cathedral City also struggled with a number of violations, including improper hot and cold food holding temperatures, improper cooking times/temperatures and handwashing practices, which led to a “B” grade. The facility will have an opportunity to raise its score when it is revisited by inspectors.
This article does not include the usual roundup of all restaurants that received “A” grades when they were visited by inspectors on July 19 through 25. The Riverside County Department of Environmental Health is in the process of transferring previous restaurant inspection reports from its old database to a new one. As a result, new reports have not been uploaded to the website since June 11.
Instead, the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health will be sending weekly inspection reports to The Desert Sun until the restaurant grading site is working properly. These reports will pertain only to restaurants that were downgraded or closed by health inspectors.
Major violations pose an imminent risk to public health and warrant the immediate closure of a food facility or immediate correction, while minor violations do not pose an imminent public health risk, but do warrant correction.

Minor violations include: Utensils and equipment in need of repair and cleaning (deteriorated wooden tortilla press; ice buildup and debris inside freezer; food debris on inner surfaces of microwave); manager eating tortilla chips from the bag then placed bag on top of cooler at cook line; wall covering not properly secured to wall; food handler cards from unapproved sources
All violations observed during probation inspection were not observed to be corrected. Facility remains closed, and a second reinspection needs to be scheduled
‘B’ grade
Michael’s Cafe, 35-955 Date Palm Drive, Suite A3-4, Cathedral City
Major violation: Improper hot and cold food holding temperatures (container of salsa measuring 46 degrees; containers of coleslaw, shredded cheese, soft cheeses, diced tomatoes, dices ham, pasta salad, potato salad, cut melon, sliced tomatoes, raw shelled eggs and boiled eggs measuring between 50-63 degrees; containers of sliced ham, pastrami, hash browns, raw beef, cooked beef and diced melon measuring between 50-60 degrees; container of butter measuring 48 degrees) | Some items were discarded while others were moved to reach proper temperature
Minor violations include: Manger handled raw shell eggs then wiped his hands on his apron; improper cooking time and temperature (potatoes were partially cooked and stored at room temperature before being cooked again per order); multiple uncovered food items stored below other foods; utensils and equipment in need of repairs and cleaning; walls in need of cleaning; one expired food handler card; and others
Due to repeated failed inspections within a two-year period, an administrative hearing will be held. “B” card posted and a reinspection date will be set
