What Was Bungie’s Payback Game?

When news broke earlier this week of the mass layoffs happening at Bungie, one bit of information that was also revealed was the state of their game known as “Payback”.

Payback was game in the works at Bungie that many assumed was Destiny 3. However, that’s not the case. In fact, it was a completely different style of game that was just set in the Destiny universe.

In a new report on the layoffs at Bungie and the state of Destiny 2, Jason Schreier says that Payback was a game that was set to “shake up the formula in major ways”.

According to Schreier, Payback was going to be a third-person game that featured characters from the franchise. It would have you explore a “large world while cooperating to battle monsters and solve puzzles.” The game was set to have inspiration and elements from games such as Genshin Impact and Warfare.

Ultimately, Payback was cancelled roughly two months ago. One of the reported reasons was to allow Bungie to focus on games that were “more imminent” such as Marathon, which is set to release in 2025.
