Who do Wichita water restrictions apply to? Can I wash my car? Your questions, answered
Wichita will move into Phase 2 of its drought response plan on Sunday, meaning Wichita water customers will have to be more diligent about conserving their water unless they want to be charged a fine.
The city will begin restricting outdoor water use to once a week per customer in an effort to preserve its water during the current drought which has led to Cheney Reservoir hitting a historically low water level. Cheney Reservoir is now below 62% as Thursday.
Phase 2 brings higher restrictions for outdoor water use, specifically when it comes to automatic sprinkler systems.
Businesses that are dependent on water — which include hospitals and car washes — are exempt from the restrictions, as well as food gardens that are watered by an irrigation system.
This is the first time the city has reached Phase 2 of its drought response since the plan was created in 2013. The goal is to reduce water use by 10% in the two months the phase is enacted, according to City Manager Robert Layton.

When can I water my lawn?
Water customers can use outdoor water once a week. The day of the week depends on the customer’s location.
Northwest of the Central and Broadway intersection: Monday
Customers northeast of Central and Broadway: Tuesday
Customers southwest of Central and Broadway: Wednesday
Customers southeast of Central and Broadway: Thursday
City water customers are not allowed to use outdoor water Friday through Sundays.
Are well users exempt from the water restrictions?
While Wichitans who use well water are exempt from the city’s water restrictions, the city is still encouraging them to do what they can to conserve use. The city’s website says well users should post a sign saying they are using well water.
How does the city track water use?
The city will track Wichitans’ water use through their water accounts. If water users use outdoor water out of their allotted time, they will receive a warning. A second violation will cost $50 and any violations after will cost $100.
Can you wash your car at home?
While restrictions don’t say anything about washing your car, the city is recommending car owners to use commercial car washes, as those both recycle water and use less water than you would if you washed your car at home.
Are there exceptions for newly seeded plants and lawns?
No, water restrictions apply to all lawns using city water.
Can I fill my pool and when?
You can fill a pool on the day you’re allowed to use outdoor water.
Do HOA rules about lawn maintenance apply during this time?
Wichita’s water restrictions supersede rules set by any homeowner associations. The city told The Eagle they have been in contact with HOAs on the drought plans since last year.
