Fernie firing on all cylinders at the KBRC with another four winners
With eight meetings left, perennial leading trainer Peter Fernie is poised to eclipse his best return of recent seasons after he landed another four winners last Sunday at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club.
Three of those victories were chalked-up in consecutive races when The Final Belle ($6.50), Zing To Win ($5.50 equal favourite) and It’s A Lance ($10) all saluted.
The sequence was broken by Fiona Scott-trained Debonnaire ($2.25 favourite) in race six, before Fernie secured the last of his winners of the eight-event card with No Whispering ($4.60 favourite) in the seventh.
Already with 46 victories, Fernie tops the leading trainer standings by 40 points from his nearest rival, Paul Tapper.
After Fernie trained 31 winners in 2017, he followed-up in the next four seasons with totals of 61, 52, 51 and 42.
His run of 14 consecutive leading trainer awards was broken in 2022, when he amassed 18 winners as the runner-up to Brock Lewthwaite.
But his powerful stable bounced back in 2023 with 48 winners.
The club’s other season awards are much closer, with Natasha Faithfull clinging to a one-point lead over Lucy Fiore for jockey of the year.
Fiore made up valuable ground with three winners last weekend and Charlotte Skerritt leads the strapper of the year standings with 15 points from Ricky Connor (13).
Debonnaire is two points clear of Hidden Ruby for horse of the year, and Chanel Cooper (10 points) has a commanding lead over Keshaw Dhurun for leading apprentice.
KBRC’s next meeting on August 11 features the Kambalda Cup, followed by the Tattersalls Cup on August 25 and the Coolgardie Cup on September 8.
This year’s Boulder Cup, Hannans Handicap and Kalgoorlie Cup will be run on September 22, October 2 and October 5, respectively.
