Fast-growing Murrieta fire triggers evacuations, heavy freeway traffic

A quickly spreading fire in the City of Murrieta triggered urgent evacuation orders as multiple structures burned Saturday, according to the city’s police department.

Murrieta PD first reported the fire at 2:05 p.m. The blaze, initially called a brush fire, was reported alongside the 215 Freeway between Los Alamos and Clinton Keith Roads.

The northbound lanes of the 215 between those roads were initially shut down. By 4 p.m., one northbound lane was reopened to traffic.

Evacuation orders were issued in a residential area near Los Alamos Road and Los Alamos Hills Sports Park. By 4:12 p.m., they were lifted.

Police said multiple structure fires were reported along Whitewood Road which has been reopened.

Murrieta fire crews will remain at the scene between Los Alamos and Clinton Keith Roads. Authorities are asking all travelers to avoid the area at this time.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
