Paris Olympics 2024: Nina Kennedy and Kurtis Marschall highlight WA athletes in action on day 10 of the games

Nina Kennedy (pole vault) — 4.40pm

The start of something great? Busselton’s finest export will grace the Stade de France with her presence for the first time at the Games on Monday afternoon.

The world number one is expected to breeze through pole vault qualifying ahead of the final later this week, but her first runs will still bear watching as she looks to banish the Olympic demons which made Tokyo so tough.

Kurtis Marschall (pole vault) — 1am

The adopted West Aussie qualified for the men’s pole vault final with no troubles.

Now he will look to become the first Aussie male since Steve Hooker to win a medal in the event — it will not be easy, but after his bronze at last year’s World Championships, you cannot rule him out.

Alanah Yukich (400m hurdles) — 4.50pm

The Gingin runner impressed in a 400m hurdle heat which include Dutch star Femke Bol, although her 55.46 was not enough to qualify her for the semifinal.

Thankfully, she will get another chance in the repechage this afternoon.

Karri Somerville, Penny Squibb (hockey) — 4pm

Australia are on a roll in the hockey, but it is time to get down to business with the group stages no more and the knock-out rounds beckoning.

The Hockeyroos take on China for a place in the semifinals this afternoon and Somerville and Squibb are once again set to play an important part as they target a first Olympic medal since 2000.

The northern suburbs sprinter won two golds at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the individual and team sprints.

He will get his Olympic campaign underway in qualifying for the team event, with his individual races to follow in the coming days.

Matt Wearn, Nia Jerwood, Conor Nicholas and Zoe Thomson (sailing) — various

Defending men’s dinghy gold medallist Matt Wearn will enter the final three races as favourite to claim back-to-back gold medals.

With a 14-point lead, his next two races will start from 8.40pm on Tuesday evening, before Wednesday’s medal race.

Zoe Thomson will look to fight back after dropping to 20th in the women’s dinghy at 6.15pm.

And dinghy duo Nia Jerwood and Conor Nicholas are still in touch with the medal race, the WA pair hoping to rise from eighth when the seventh and eighth races of the mixed event kick off at 11.05pm.

After beating Ethan Ewing in the all-Aussie quarter-final, the Margaret River product will look to book his spot in the final.

He takes on Gabriel Medina in the semifinal, and will be favourite in the his tangle with the Brazilian world number eight.

John Hedges, Luke Pavillard (water polo) — 7.35pm

Will it be more wins for the Aussie Sharks, one of the Olympics’ surprise packets?

They take on Japan in their final group game before the quarter-finals, and with the Japanese yet to win, a promising result and an improved seeding for the last eight could be forthcoming.

Margo Joseph-Kuo, Raphaelle Gauthier and Anastasia Kusmawan (artistic swimming) — 1.30am

The artistic swimmers will finally get their chance to enter the water.

The WA trio will be part of an eight-person Australian team taking part in the technical routine.
