Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has a lot of potential for expansions. The game, set in the far future of the 41st millennium, follows Lieutenant Titus, a Space Marine super-soldier serving the Imperium of Man. 

Saber Interactive is developing the game, with Focus Entertainment as the publisher. The first game, released in 2011 by Relic and THQ, got generally positive reviews. The new game blends third-person shooter and hack-and-slash gameplay, with Tyranids as the main enemy.

Potential for DLC Expansions in Space Marine 2

Fans on the r/SpaceMarine subreddit have expressed their curiosity about possible expansions, similar to that of Shadow of the Erdtree, which drastically expand on the game with a bunch of new content. 

One user imagined battles against other races in the 40K universe, like the Orks, Necrons, or even a whole army of a Chaos God. They suggested that such expansions would be well worth a $20-$40 price, similar to Elden Ring’s DLC.

Other users speculated about future DLC expansions, noting that some might be free while others could be paid. There were also talks about paid DLC that were limited to cosmetics, leaving gameplay elements and content free for all players, as confirmed and guaranteed by the developers.

Given this feedback, Space Marine 2 should consider taking a page from FromSoftware’s book. Shadow of the Erdtree set a high standard for expansions by offering substantial content that not only enhances the core game but is sufficient and big enough as a game on its own.

The game could follow this example by introducing expansions that add new races, missions, and gameplay elements while maintaining a reasonable price. This approach would not only keep the game fresh and engaging but also provide players with new content akin to a live-service game.

Maintaining the Game’s Unique Identity

While expanding the game with new content is important, it’s equally crucial to maintain the unique identity that makes this game special. From what we’ve seen so far, the game has intense combat, with players switching between ranged and melee attacks to fight off waves of aliens. 

The latest gameplay video and deep-dive showed the importance of melee combat in this game, which sets it apart from other third-person shooters that feature aliens or monsters like Gears of War.

Some players on the subreddit emphasized the need to focus on what makes the game unique. They pointed out that not every Warhammer 40K game needs to include every race. Instead, they suggested that the game should concentrate on the Thousand Sons and Tyranids, the main enemies of the game. 

Players have also been reassured by the game’s developer, Saber Interactive, that all features and gameplay content will be free and that any DLC that is paid for will only be cosmetic. This makes sure that every single players has access to the same content.

Purely cosmetic DLC that doesn’t enhance or change the gameplay, like chapter-specific helmets, pauldrons, and armor pieces, can provide additional revenue for the developers without compromising the integrity of the game.
