Official JP Street Fighter tournament run by pharma company punishes players for not sleeping enough

A new Street Fighter 6 tournament taking place in Japan will penalise players if they don’t get enough sleep beforehand.

The Sleep Fighter tournament (as reported by Den-Faminico Gamer) is an official Capcom-backed tournament, being held by SS Pharmaceuticals to promote its sleep drug Drewell.

The tournament will consist of three-player teams, who take part in a series of best-of-three matches to earn points, with the team scoring most points progressing to the next round.

However, the tournament will also have special rules that introduce Sleep Points to the equation.

Players are required to get at least six hours’ sleep in the week leading up to the tournament, a total of 42 hours per person and 126 for the whole team.

If the team’s total sleep hours are less than 126 by the time the tournament starts, they will be penalised by five points for every hour of sleep deprivation. If their combined sleep hours are 123, for example, they will lose 15 points.

The tournament is part of SS Pharmaceuticals’ Active Sleep Project, which aims to encourage Japanese people to get more sleep.

“Sleep is not just for getting rid of daily fatigue”, the tournament website says. “Because it gives our bodies and minds the power to challenge ourselves.

“By actively sleeping, you can make the most of each day and live your life to the fullest. In order to bring this ‘active sleep’ to as many people as possible, we are starting the Active Sleep Project to do our best to support those who are taking on the challenge of sleeping.”
