Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K Dream is Shattered If Amazon Won’t Agree to One Condition Set by Games Workshop
The last few years have been quite tumultuous for both Henry Cavill and his fans, which saw him getting axed from two of his biggest stints, Superman and Geralt of Rivia. Moreover, the actor, who once fell just inches short of landing the gig of James Bond back in the mid-2000s, is also seemingly out of the race for the next 007, following the producers’ want to follow a young Bond.
But there was some light at the end of the tunnel for both Cavill and his fans, as back in 2022, it was revealed the actor was actively working on a Warhammer 40K adaptation with Amazon. Although this has the potential to be the next big thing in his career, there is one slight issue.
Warhammer 40K’s Future Depends on Amazon’s Stance on the Creative Guidelines
Games Workshop, publisher and owner of the Warhammer 40K IP, signed a deal with Amazon last year, which will grant the latter the rights to produce film and television series, based on the IP. Moreover, Amazon will also have the chance to acquire rights to Warhammer Fantasy, which will depend on the success of the Warhammer 40K adaptation, which Henry Cavill is spearheading.
However, the deal will only proceed if the two giants mutually agree on the creative guidelines before the end of 2024. As of now, the agreement has yet to be closed, and with five months to go, both Cavill and his fans will have their eye set on Amazon and whether it agrees to the creative guidelines set by Games Workshop.
Being Faithful to the Source Material Is Henry Cavill’s Priority
While Cavill has had the privilege to play the likes of Superman and Geralt of Rivia onscreen, helming the Warhammer 40K project “is the greatest privilege of my [Cavill’s] professional career”.
Having been invested in the IP since his childhood, being faithful to the source material is the key to him, as apart from starring in the lead, Cavill will also serve as an executive producer on the show.
He said:
I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon, and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh-on lifelong dream come true
In another interview with Josh Horowitz, Cavill further touched on his passion for the IP, stating:
This is the stuff I’ve been dealing with since I was a kid. This is the stuff I spend my free time daydreaming about, as an adult as well, and I get to bring it into life. There is no greater reason than I joined the industry than doing something like this.
Considering how passionate the MOS star has been about the IP, fans will hope, unlike Superman and Witcher, the actor’s passion project isn’t axed due to some creative disputes.
