Roos minus stars but still a big chance against Mines Rovers

Kalgoorlie will be without forward Tyrell Metcalf because of suspension for Saturday’s round 18 clash against Mines Rovers in the Goldfields Football League.

Metcalf kicked three goals last weekend against Boulder in just his second game for the Roos, but earned a one-game suspension after being red-carded.

It puts a dent in a forward line still without Ricky Whitehead, who is expected to return for the team’s round 19 clash with Kambalda.

Co-captain Jack Varian will also be missing this weekend as Kalgoorlie continue a late bid for third spot and a home final.

The Roos are fourth but level on six wins with Boulder, who hold the higher ladder spot with a percentage of 149.88, compared to 125.00.

Kalgoorlie have won three of their past four games and boast wins over second-placed Mines Rovers in each of the past two clashes.

The round 13 margin was one point.

“Obviously we want to win every game, but this one is important because we definitely want to get third spot and a home first semi-final,” Kalgoorlie coach Rick Butterfield said.

“Ideally this will be the first of two wins in a row (before a round 20 bye).”

With 10 wins, Mines Rovers are guaranteed second place, but coach Marc Johnstone is keen to turn the tables on an in-form Roos before the finals.

“Having winning form and the confidence it brings is always good,” Johnstone said.

“At the same time, we’re mindful of managing players, hopefully keeping them injury-free and playing good footy, which has generally been us for the past month.”

Also on Saturday, flag favourites Railways host Kambalda at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre.
