Halligan fires on all cylinders in Diorites’ forward line against Kambalda

Mines Rovers’ Chanelle Halligan has surged to the top of the goal kicking standings in the Goldfields Football League women’s competition after her 16 majors last Saturday highlighted a percentage-boosting win against Kambalda, 27.12 (174) to 0.0 (0).

The dynamic centre-half-forward booted eight goals to half-time and added one in the third before putting an exclamation mark on a dominant display with a seven-goal last term.

Ella Kerr, Sarah Cosh, Phoebe Tucker and Monique Dodgson contributed two goals apiece as the first-placed Diorites surged two games and percentage clear of Railways.

Halligan finished with 16.5, and boasts 36 goals for the season — 13 more than Kalgoorlie’s Wiebke Piringer and Railways’ Drew Epis.

Ahead of this Saturday’s clash with fourth-placed Kalgoorlie, Mines Rovers coach Quinny Matla urged his players to stay focused as the finals loomed.

“There’s no foot off the throttle,” Matla said.

“We’ve got Kangas this weekend and then a bye that we’ll use to relax and regroup.

“Finals are a crazy time of the year and there are no breaks, which is why it’s such a different kettle of fish.

“It’s a rocket up the a… and anything can happen.

“Whatever happens earlier in the season means nothing in finals.”

Also last weekend, Boulder’s Teresa Stokes kicked two goals in the side’s 24-point win against Kalgoorlie, 5.4 (34) to 1.4 (10).

In a low-scoring match, the Tigers’ three-goal first half was enough to set them on a path to victory, with Stokes’ two conversions complemented by one each to Paris Ulijn, Aaliyah Ashwin and Tequilia LeBois.

Melissa Tingey kicked Kalgoorlie’s goal.

Boulder hold down third spot by four games and percentage over Kalgoorlie, who are this season chasing a third consecutive GFLW flag.
