No emergency detected before plane crash in Brazil: officials

STORY: ::Sao Paulo, Brazil

:: Officials say the crashed Brazilian plane didn’t

alert control bodies of an emergency

::August 9, 2024

::Marcelo Moreno, Air Brigadier, Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aircraft Accidents

“It’s too early to say but what we have so far is that the aircraft didn’t communicate with the control bodies saying there was an emergency. Preliminarily, we have information that there was no information from the aircraft, that it didn’t have any kind of emergency. Once more, it’s all premature.”

“It’s a catastrophic event where people died, the aircraft caught fire, it was a total loss. It’s a complicated event. We are committed to delivering the final and ostensible report to society, always in the shortest possible time. However, depending on the complexity of each event, this is a completely undesirable occurence. As I tell people: all the information, be it air traffic control or meteorological, all will be collected in the first phase for later data analysis.”

Regional carrier Voepass said the plane, bound for Sao Paulo’s international airport, took off from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, and crashed at around 1:30 p.m. (1630 GMT) in the town of Vinhedo, some 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo, killing 61 people on board.

Voepass, Brazil’s fourth-largest airline by market share, said it could not provide any additional information on what caused the plane to crash. It had originally reported 62 people aboard the aircraft.
