Woman killed in early morning Indianapolis fire, family of 4 and dog displaced
INDIANAPOLIS — A 66-year-old woman died early Sunday in a fire that also displaced a family of four, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.
Shortly after 4 a.m., fire crews were called to a double residence fire in the 4500 block of East 19th Street by a man and woman who were walking past the home and saw fire through the window.
The pair pounded on doors and windows to alert the residents, officials said, causing a pane to break and cut the woman’s hand, leaving a slight injury. A family of four was sleeping on one side of the building, which did not sustain fire damage. Officials credited the passersby with the quick evacuation of the family and their dog.
Upon arrival, crews reported the blaze was in the front of the structure.
A 66-year-old died Sunday, Aug. 11 after a fire erupted in an east-side residence.
As 11 units battled the fire, first responders found a 66-year-old woman in the connected residence shortly later. She died at the scene. The Marion County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the woman.
The blaze came under control nearly 15 minutes later. The fire’s cause remains under investigation. Officials said the residence did not have a working smoke alarm.
