How to Install GTA 5 Mods: A Step-by-Step Guide
GTA 5 is one of the longest-running games in the industry, and that’s because of its online game mode and the plethora of mods available for the title. Rockstar’s 2013 game is one of the most heavily modded titles, allowing players to experience Los Santos in ways they could never imagine. If you are new to the modding world, check out our guide on how to install GTA 5 mods below.
How to Install Mods for GTA 5?
Players should first know that even though modding is allowed for GTA 5, you could get banned if you don’t use it correctly. Rockstar only allows players to mod the single-player version of the title, and if players use mods in GTA Online, they get banned instantly. So, it is essential to remember to deactivate all mods when entering GTA 5’s online mode.
Coming to the modding portion, you will require a few things before adding mods to GTA 5. Firstly, players should own a copy of GTA 5. Then, they need Script Hook V, a library that will enable script native functions and .asi plugins for the game. Players will also need Script Hook V .NET, a .asi plugin that enables .NET language scripts to run in-game.
Some mods also require a LUA plugin, which you must download to write LUA scripts for GTA 5. Players will also need a mod manager if they intend to download multiple mods, and the most popular one is GTAV Mod Manager (link). Lastly, you will need tools like 7Zip, WinZip or WinRar to extract the files. That’s all the requirements, now let’s get into the process.

Script Hook V
- After downloading the Script Hook V, players must extract and access the ‘bin’ folder, where they will find the ScriptHookV.dll, dinput8.dll, and NativeTrainer.asi files.
- Players should copy and paste these files into the GTA 5 game directory in the exact location as GTA5.exe.
- Players require ScriptHookV.dll to run the scripts, dinput8.dll allows players to load .asi files, and NativeTrainer.asi will enable you to customise various aspects of the title.
- Then, from Script Hook V .NET, players should copy the ScriptHookVDotNet.asi, ScriptHookVDotNet2.dll and ScriptHookVDotNet3.dll files into their game directory. However, you will require Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2019 (x64) and Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 if you don’t have a Windows 10 or higher PC.
LUA Plugins
Similarly, once you have downloaded and extracted the SDK file for LUA, you must copy it to the exact location as Script Hook V. Players will find the LUA_SDK.asi in a folder called ‘scripts’.
