Octopath Traveler suddenly delisted | Smash Jump

A publisher shakeup has led to Octopath Traveler facing a delsiting on the eShop. The game was originally published by Nintendo directly but has since reverted to Square Enix.

Wario64 on Twitter spotted the delisting of the fan-favorite RPG, with Gematsu noting that publishing rights shifted back in December and this could be the result of this change. Perhaps this is some sort of backwards preparation for the release of a PlayStation version, which the game currently lacks despite its sequel finding a home on it.

Also worth noting that the publisher changed from Nintendo to Square Enix:

The silver lining, though, is that third-party retailer codes still work, so you can still pick the game up on the Switch, though it seems the codes have since been sold out. We’re not sure if this is a temporary blunder or if Square Enix is looking to move away from the hybrid-handheld altogether.

This major change also comes as FromSoftware parent Kadokawa Corporation purchased Octopath Traveler developer ACQUIRE for a mysterious sum. So far — at the time of writing — Square Enix, ACQUIRE, and Nintendo have all remained silent on the matter.
