Perth Lynx guard Steph Gorman re-signs for WNBL season and is ready to defend the biggest names

Perth Lynx guard Steph Gorman believes an intense and injury free off-season, combined w=ith spending 12 months in a professional environment will have her perfectly prepared to terrorise the opposition’s best players after re-signing with the club.

Gorman’s defensive skills were the key to gaining her first WNBL contract last year, but she suffered a serious foot injury early last season and that halted her momentum.

The 24-year-old still played a key role in the team’s surge to the grand final, but can feel the difference between her fitness levels when she joined the club and what she is now capable of.

“I think my fitness has been evident to most people lately. People have been commenting on it,” Gorman said.

“I am definitely stronger and fitter. I want to play for longer and at a higher intensity. I think it will be evident on the court this season.

“Defence is definitely by biggest strength and it’s my favourite way to play. I have a lot of fun in those type of games so I’m excited that I can go harder at that and for longer. Hopefully I can add to my offensive game and develop that, but I am definitely a defence-minded player.”

Gorman remained in Perth instead of returning to Victoria during the off-season and led Cockburn Cougars to the NBL1 West grand final.

But it is the loss in the WNBL grand final that remains embedded in her mind as she prepares to pull on the Lynx jersey again.

“That inspires me heaps. I had so much fun last year, but if we can come back and do one better, then that would be amazing,” Gorman said.

“It was an easy decision to re-sign. Perth feels like home. I don’t think I would have had the same opportunity if I hadn’t moved here. It was a really important decision for my basketball.”
