Three arrested in connection with brawl near downtown Corpus Christi business

Three people were arrested in connection with an altercation in which one person suffered a severe head injury and another was shot in the leg early Saturday outside of a downtown Corpus Christi business.

About 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Corpus Christi Police Department officers responded to a shooting in the 700 block of Chaparral Street and found a 26-year-old man on the ground with severe head injuries, according to a news release published online by senior officer Antonio Contreras. The man was taken to a local hospital, where a physical examination determined the cause was blunt force rather than a gunshot wound, the release said.

Multiple officers arrived at the scene to assist, where they contacted several parties and witnesses who were involved, Contreras said.

A woman whom police suspected of being involved arrived at a local hospital with a single gunshot wound to her leg. Her injury was not life-threatening. Officers arrived at that hospital and contacted her, as well, the release said.

Conversations with witnesses and video footage provided by security cameras led officers to determine that the individuals involved were leaving a nearby business when a fight broke out in the roadway, Contreras said.

The footage showed that 26-year-old Jakob Martinez struck the victim several times with a weapon, and that 23-year-old Serena Alonzo and 26-year-old Maria Alonzo were also seen assaulting the victim while he lay on the ground, the release said.

Witnesses attempted to stop Martinez, but he fired several shots from a gun, accidentally striking Maria Alonzo in the leg, Contreras said.

All three people were arrested and charged with aggravated assault for causing serious bodily injury. Martinez was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the release said.

Officers found Martinez and Serena Alonzo, placing them into custody, and placed Maria Alonzo into custody after she was treated and medically cleared from the hospital, the release said. The weapon fired was recovered.

Several other people were involved in the incident, some of whom have been identified, Contreras said.

Police encourage anyone with information about the incident to call 361-886-2840 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 361-888-TIPS.
