Aussie Olivia Gadecki through to first WTA semi-final
Young Australian Olivia Gadecki is enjoying the biggest week of her tennis life in Mexico.
Gadecki advanced to her first WTA semi-final on Friday after beating Martina Trevisan 6-2 3-6 6-1 at the Guadalajara Open.
The 22-year-old qualifier, who is ranked No.152, converted eight of 10 break-point chances to beat Trevisan, who was a Roland Garros semi-finalist in 2022.
Though the Gold Coast-born star struggled with her first serve on Friday, she still managed to win 69 per cent of points on it, while recording four aces.
Gadecki arrived in Mexico with just two wins over top-100 players but has recorded three this week, including one over world No.11 Danielle Collins in the biggest win of her career.
In the semi-finals, Gadecki will play Camila Osorio, who defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 7-6 (8-6) 6-1. With the win, the 22-year-old Osorio became the first Colombian to reach the semis of a 500-level tournament.
In the other semi-final, fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia is awaiting the winner of Friday’s later quarter-final between Marina Stakusic and fifth-seeded Magdalena Frech.
Garcia advanced earlier in a walkover after Marie Bouzkova withdrew due to an illness.
The tournament is being played on hard courts at the Complejo Panamericano de Tenis in Guadalajara.
