Prime Minister Anthony Albanese forced to defend Tanya Plibersek over Nature Positive laws

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been forced to defend Tanya Plibersek after he overruled the Environment Minister on Nature Positive negotiations with the Greens.

The comments come after a day of confusion in which Mr Albanese slammed the door shut on including a ‘climate trigger’ in the proposed Nature Positive legislation as part of talks with the Greens.

Hours after the PM made these comments, Ms Plibersek claimed the door was still open.

The Opposition seized on the two being at odds with each other, with shadow environment minister Jonno Duniam calling on the two to “get their story straight”.

On Tuesday, Mr Albanese was forced to defend Ms Plibersek, saying she had been referring specifically to the safeguard mechanism.

“That’s what we have. We won’t be inserting a climate change trigger into the legislation because that is not what the legislation’s about,” Mr Albanese said.

He also claimed he and Ms Plibersek were united on the proposed environmental watchdog.

In her comments to The Nightly on Monday, Ms Plibersek said the Government was “talking to people across Parliament”.

“From the beginning, I have said that delivering improvements to national environment laws would require a bit of common sense, cooperation, and compromise,” she said in the statement.

More to come.
