HBO Boss Shares Exciting Update Update About The Harry Potter TV Series

Earlier this month, HBO sent out an open casting call for the upcoming Harry Potter series specifically to find children in the United Kingdom who can play the three main characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. But just because casting will soon begin, HBO CEO Casey Bloys wants fans to know that the Harry Potter show is still a few years away.

While speaking with Deadline, acknowledged that casting call before explaining that the series is still being written. “Writers have started,” said Bloys. “[Director] Mark Mylod has started. The team, they’re hiring department heads, casting, and we’re off.”

When asked about the casting call’s request for children of a certain age in March 2025, Bloys replied, “We haven’t announced any [date]. I think they were talking about age [the young actors] will be in March, that doesn’t mean necessarily a production start date.”

Bloys added that he is “very, very happy and excited about what [screenwriter Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod have] got going,” before predicting a late 2026 or 2027 launch for the show on HBO and Max.

The casting call invited children of all ethnicities and backgrounds to apply for the primary roles. But the anti-trans views of Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling continue to hang over the franchise after the author alienated herself from some fans and a few of the actors who appeared in the films.
