After 2 homes collapse, NC 12 flooded but open at Outer Banks; road could close at night

OCRACOKE, N.C. (WNCN) — Along with two oceanfront homes falling into the sea at the Outer Banks Friday, the main highway on the islands was flooded Saturday, according to North Carolina officials.

The flooding is taking place Saturday afternoon during high tide on Ocracoke, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

N.C. 12 was closed for a couple of days earlier this week when the high surf wiped out dunes along the road.

Crews managed to open the road around noon Wednesday after sandbags were stacked beside the surf.

On Saturday, crews said N.C. 12 remained open despite the overwash in “several places.” Ocean flooding was also seen under homes in Buxton along with some water on N.C. 12.

Officials said the highway should be open as the tide falls Saturday afternoon.

“HOWEVER, be aware that a nighttime closure is possible. Drive with EXTREME caution,” NCDOT officials said Saturday.
