St. Louis officer dies after I-70 crash

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis police officer is dead after a car struck him on eastbound I-70 near Grand Boulevard Sunday morning. He was setting flares at an accident scene.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has identified the officer as David Lee.

The injured officer, an 18-year veteran of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, was rushed to an area hospital after the crash in critical condition. Lee passed away on Sunday afternoon in the presence of family and friends.

“We are devastated over the loss of our beloved colleague. Please pray for Officer Lee’s family, friends, and the entire SLMPD and St. Louis community,” states St. Louis Police in a Facebook post.

The driver remained at the scene and police say they have a suspect in custody. Accident reconstruction teams shut down the highway to collect evidence.

“My heart goes out to the family, friends and co-workers of Officer David Lee. Officer Lee will forever be honored and remembered as a hero,” Chief Ron Battelle, BackStoppers executive director, said. “Please pray for the Lee family, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and for everyone who knew and loved Officer Lee.”

When a first responder dies in the line of duty, BackStoppers responds with immediate assistance by providing the surviving family with a $10,000 contribution.
