Body pulled from water at Virginia Beach Oceanfront

A body was pulled out of the Atlantic Ocean between 13th and 14th streets Monday night at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, a fire department spokesperson said.

Around 7:30 p.m., crews were dispatched after a report of a body floating in the water near 14th Street, spokesperson Barbara Morrison wrote in an email.

Rescue swimmers pulled the body ashore around 8:07 p.m.

Morrison said the body has been turned over to the police department.

Police on Saturday received a report of three men struggling to make it to shore while swimming off of 16th Street shortly before 8:30 p.m.

One of the men was found unconscious in the water about 10 minutes after the initial report came in and was close enough to shore to be pulled in by police and EMS, a police spokesperson said. It’s unclear how the men knew each other.

A wide search had been underway since Saturday night, looking for two swimmers. They were identified as Sergio Olcot Ajbal and Sergio Xinico, both 22 years old and from Chesapeake.

The man who was found Saturday was hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday night. A police spokesperson was unable to provide an update on the man’s status Monday.

Virginia Beach police and fire departments each had one marine unit in the water conducting the search Monday. Police also had two officers on ATVs searching from Rudee Inlet to Fort Story.

Red flag conditions remained Monday, and Virginia Beach lifeguards were warning visitors of the dangers of swimming. The search area extended from Rudee Inlet to the North End, which police determined based on history, experience and the current weather conditions including tide cycles, a spokesperson said.
