Can Sony’s Remaster Gamble Be Enough To Outshine Xbox at Tokyo Game Show?

PlayStation is about to make a move and it is about time. The gaming community has been waiting for Sony Interactive Entertainment to reveal new and exciting content for the platform. While the gaming company did officially unveil new hardware like the highly-anticipated Pro model, fans are still waiting for official announcements about upcoming first-party titles. Unfortunately, Sony can’t get out of their way to fall back to its strategy of remastering older titles and charging them for full price.

It was not long ago when news of older first-party games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone will be remastered, and some fans find it unnecessary. The original versions can run smoothly on the current-generation hardware. If these games are the highlight of the upcoming event, this is a window of opportunity for other platforms and events to steal the attention away from Sony.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Better Have a Strong Lineup of Surprises for the PlayStation Community

The gaming community was vocal about how they felt every time Sony Interactive Entertainment announced another State of Play. Other popular public figures within the gaming industry like David Jaffe take every opportunity to throw shade at the gaming company, and it is safe to assume that his opinions and sentiments are shared across the general gaming community. The PlayStation brand is arguably one of the biggest competitors in the market, and fans expect high-quality content worth looking forward to.

Sony announced the next event, which will serve as a staging ground to reveal news and updates on more than 20 upcoming PlayStation 5 and PSVR 2 games. Some fans have gotten a gist of what the gaming company will reveal after recent leaks of a remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn for the current generation system and for the PC platform, which has already been rated, and Days Gone is rumored to receive the same treatment. While remasters do not require a lot of resources, fans are tired of waiting for the next major first-party game.

Other events and shows are on the horizon, namely the Tokyo Game Show which will reveal new content about Hideo Kojima’s upcoming project: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Sony is reportedly attending as a general exhibitor. There is a strong likelihood that no major PlayStation news will be revealed in another event apart from the upcoming Death Stranding sequel, and it would make sense for Sony to share major news in its events like a State of Play.

It is time for Sony to stop keeping its secrets to themselves and give the players something to root for. Naughty Dog will be celebrating The Last of Us Day in the next few days and there is a slim chance for the developers to subtly tease the next major sequel without giving too much away and reserve it for a major PlayStation event whether it is for a future Showcase or another State of Play.

The Upcoming State of Play Should Have Something Worth Looking Forward To

Sony has been releasing remasters of beloved PlayStation franchises like The Last of Us and Uncharted for days; however, fans are tired of playing the same games even with the impressive technological advancements. Throughout the PlayStation 5 life cycle, Naughty Dog has yet to release an original game for the console generation, which is quite concerning.

There is a strong possibility that other game shows will overshadow whatever Sony has in store and the gaming community will pay more attention to third-party events. There are no major announcements about major franchises like Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima thus far; however, it is no secret that Santa Monica Studio and Sucker Punch Productions are actively working on something, and there are rumors of an upcoming story expansion from Insomniac Games but are not comfortable revealing anything yet.

The PlayStation brand has always had a strong footing in the gaming industry, and Sony is slowly dropping the ball. Remasters and news of smaller games will not match the excitement the gaming community has for major franchises.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is renowned for its high-quality first-party exclusives and the gaming community wants more of it now more than ever. Perhaps first-party studios are still not ready, and Sony is short on options regarding what to present.
