Hideo Kojima Admits He Was Not Comfortable Seeing Others Play Metal Gear Solid Up Until A Few Years Ago

Director Hideo Kojima is renowned for developing video games that redefined the genre. The Japanese game director is arguably the most well-known video game developer and has earned the respect of his colleagues for his contributions to the ever-evolving game industry and the player base. Kojima’s creative vision paved the way for the youth to be exposed to this unique and immersive craft. However, the auteur of video games is still somewhat embarrassed of his previous work despite being universally praised.

The game director revealed that he often goes online and content creators feature his older games and feel embarrassed. However, seeing today’s children experiencing something for the first time that has been around for the last three decades changed his opinion about the subject.

Director Hideo Kojima No Longer Feels Mortified After Seeing Kids Play the Metal Gear Franchise

Kojima has had his fair share of obstacles as a video game developer. Hideo Kojima parted ways with Konami after working with the company for years and giving the world the Metal Gear franchise; however, Kojima always felt that he could do more by going independent and making it official with Kojima Productions. The game director’s reputation allowed him to establish connections with other major players in the video game industry. Sony Interactive Entertainment did not hesitate to offer a helping hand to help the director get on his feet for Death Stranding.

Older video games, especially from three decades ago do not age like fine wine. Most players today wouldn’t bother playing an older game and would immediately judge the dated visuals, older graphics, and janky gameplay. Kojima revealed that he was mortified after watching a popular Japanese content creator featuring 1998’s Metal Gear Solid. Perhaps the game director did not see the possibility of a future where video games can be streamed and felt his private diary has been publicly outed; however, his opinion has changed.

But now I see these young kids playing Metal Gear Solid, a game made 30 years ago, and they are having fun … My feelings have started to change.

The Metal Gear franchise has helped put the director’s name on the map and while Konami owns the rights to the franchise, Kojima’s older achievements allowed him to achieve new ones. Kojima revealed that the first building he acquired while working on the original Death Stranding was made possible because the previous owners were fans of the Metal Gear series. The universe works in mysterious ways proving that Kojima can never really escape his past and the looming shadow of Metal Gear Solid.

The gaming community was raised right, especially after seeing younger players experience Metal Gear Solid willingly despite the dated production value, the game stood well against the test of time. Kojima has learned plenty since then and has adapted to modern technology to make something monumental through the Death Stranding franchise.

Players who originally experienced the original version of Metal Gear Solid before it was remastered for modern consoles had their fun three decades ago, and today’s youth having a similar experience inspires video game directors like Kojima to keep doing what they do. The timeless joy video games can bring shouldn’t be undermined or frowned upon because of the dated quality.

Director Hideo Kojima had a unique vision for the Metal Gear franchise and was comfortable with the idea of knowing players experiencing it for themselves in the comfort of their homes with friends and family for the first time and seeing popular public figures and influencers live streaming or making YouTube videos out of it for content was not in his bingo card. The director eventually came around after seeing how his work affected the modern generation.

Not all video games stand well against the test of time. Some older video games are beyond enjoyable because of the dated visuals and janky gameplay; however, Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid was made from a different cloth, and the gaming community today loved playing every second which is what older gamers probably felt three decades ago.

Konami struck gold with Kojima and the Metal Gear franchise encouraging other game developers to keep up and contribute to the action-adventure and stealth genre. The gaming community that grew up with the franchise was fortunate to experience greatness in earnest before the age of modern remasters, remakes, and ports that are being treated as soulless cash grabs.
