We Have a Fair Idea About Ghost of Yotei Villains as Sequel Finally Puts an End to More Mongol Invasion

The long wait for a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima finally ended when Ghost of Yotei was announced unexpectedly at the very end of the recent PlayStation’s State of Play. Sucker Punch revealed an announcement trailer at the event, which looked absolutely stunning. This highly anticipated title is going to hit the PS5 and PS5 Pro in 2025.

The developers again have remained faithful to all the previous assumptions, as players will once again put their feet in the shoes of a samurai, traversing through Japan. However, this time, beyond Jin Sakai’s story on Tsushima Island. And now, after seeing the trailer, we might have an idea about who is the villain of our new warrior will be.

The Story of Ghost of Yotei – The Journey of Atsu Begins

In Ghost of Yotei, we are going to see a new samurai warrior, Atsu. This new hero will conceal her face behind the ghost mask as she embarks on her journey in feudal Japan in the year 1603.

Despite this huge diversion in the story, the Senior Communication Manager at Sucker Punch, Andrew Goldfarb, has assured us (via PlayStation.Blog):

When we set out to make a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world. 

This story plots 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, where we will find ourselves in the vicinity of Yotei Mountain, which is a towering peak in the heart of Ezo (presently Hokkaido). It seems the developers have finally took a feature from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

This area is outside the rule of Japan and far from the organized samurai clans of Tsushima. The game will feature the 17th century’s Ezo as a land full of grassy plains and snow-covered tundra.

Another exciting aspect of the game is that it is “the first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5”, unlike its predecessor, which was made for PlayStation 4. That means the game will showcase superior visuals, which will make the world feel even more real, along with additional graphical aspects like twinkling stars and auroras. 

Who Are Going to Be the Villains for Atsu?

Despite a grand announcement and revealing the overview of the story, Sucker Punch is yet to get into the details of the game’s storyline. However, that didn’t stop fans from speculating on it. Many fans have come up with many theories.

For example, a Reddit user named baudelioelite14 thinks it will be the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors who will be the main threat to our samurai warriors, like how it was the Mongols to Jin Sakai in the previous games.

And as it is 300 years after the story of Tsushima, we will finally see an end to the Mongol invasion of Japan. It seems the main objective of Atsu will be stopping the conquistadors from reaching all the way up North to Hokkaido.

Another Reddit user named tbell_95 has come up with a different story. This fan emphasizes Sucker Punch’s history of main characters taking the whole fight against the system or the government.

Similarly, Atsu will also battle it out against the Matsumae Clan. This clan was the ruling power of the Hokkaido region in Japan in 1603 at the time of the unification of Japan under Tokugawa Ieyasu.
