Shigeru Miyamoto Has Both Haters and Supporters For Comments on Nintendo Not Using AI For Its Future Games

Along with PlayStation and Xbox, another console that has become a staple in the gaming industry is Nintendo. This Japanese company has been reigning in the gaming world for more than three decades, bringing popular consoles like Game Boy, Switch, and many more along with some fabulous games.

Despite this brilliance from the company, it was never considered to be on par with the other two giants in the market. However, fans of this console company have always liked its own essence. The game director of this long-hailed association wants this company to stay like this, without going with the flow and opting out of using artificial intelligence.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Doesn’t Want to Use AI for Future Game Development

Generative AI has to be the most talked-about aspect in the world right now. Not only in gaming, this ultra-futuristic technology has found extensive use in various fields like health, space, automobiles, and whatnot! In the gaming industry, many companies have already decided to implement this technology not only in their products but also in their employments.

However, the Game Director at Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, thinks otherwise. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he stated about the importance of the originality of the company:

It might seem like we are just going the opposite direction for the sake of going in the opposite direction, but it really is trying to find what makes Nintendo special. There is a lot of talk about A.I., for example. When that happens, everyone starts to go in the same direction, but that is where Nintendo would rather go in a different direction.

However, this stance from Miyamoto has mixed reactions. Some fans think this old-school habit is holding this company back from prospering more and reaching the levels of other consoles available in the market. On the other hand, some fans really appreciated this decision of the company to not forget its roots.

This fan heavily criticized the company.

Another fan showed some real support for this stance, giving more importance to creativity than technology.

It’s true Nintendo’s USP has always been its originality and authenticity. Despite other consoles running after modernity and technology, this long-standing company focused on the core aspect. And that is, despite lacking high-end hardware like PlayStation and Xbox, this Japanese company still holds its ground strong.

Shigeru Miyamoto Seems to be Following the Paths of the Company’s President

Not just Miyamoto, the President of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, also stated the company’s stance about not using AI in its first-party titles. In a Q&A session with the investors in July, this is what he had to say about incorporating AI into the company (via TweakTown):

We have decades of know-how in creating optimal gaming experiences for our customers, and while we remain flexible in responding to technological developments, we hope to continue to deliver value that is unique to us and cannot be achieved through technology alone.

However, Furukawa acknowledged that AI and game development have been closely related, and this technology has been used in the past to control enemy character movements in the game. But using generative AI to develop games can make intellectual property rights vulnerable, as there will always remain a question of who owns the product that is made by using this technology.
