You Know It’s Bad When Overwatch 2 x My Hero Academia Collab is One of Xbox Tokyo Game Show’s Best Reveals

With day one release changes, a price hike, and lackluster games, the last couple of months haven’t proven to be the best for Xbox. Microsoft has invested heavily in the console and its Game Pass service in the previous five years. However, it seems like these efforts haven’t entirely paid off, as they’ve failed miserably to lure in new gamers.

September 26th was supposed to be a big day for Xbox fans. Microsoft had confirmed that it would be participating in the Tokyo Games Show 2024. Gamers expected some big launches for the console, which would’ve allowed them to leap ahead of PlayStation. Unfortunately, the entire highlight of the event of an Overwatch 2 x My Hero Academia collab is just proving how terrible things are for the system.

At the Xbox Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft-owned Blizzard gave us a look into some of its upcoming plans. These included a brand-new crossover for Overwatch 2 with the incredibly popular anime My Hero Academia, as well as StarCraft: Remastered and Starcraft II, both debuting on PC Game Pass.

The Overwatch 2 x My Hero Academia crossover is all set to kick off on October 17th. The event will run through October 30th, where players can obtain skins of iconic characters such as Deku, All Might, Uravity, Kirko, and Tomura Shigaraki. Of course, in typical Overwatch fashion, these skins come at a premium cost, so be prepared to fork out some money.

Even though it’s not the promised PvE content, it’s great to see Blizzard is trying to move forward and generate interest in Overwatch 2. Such crossovers can go a long way to build hype and lure in gamers, as proven by Fortnite, which has every franchise and character under the sun in the game to experience.

However, this doesn’t change the fact that the Xbox Tokyo Game Show was a complete flop. Phil Spencer and his team promised to feature an exciting lineup of AAA games to build upon the future of the Microsoft console. However, all they’ve given us this time around are trailers and insignificant games.

Microsoft’s 2024 showings for its gaming console have been a disaster over the past few months. Let’s hope they can finally sort things out and bring a truly ground-breaking game; otherwise, the future is doomed for the Xbox family of consoles.

PlayStation 5 Continues to Dominate Xbox Consoles

The past four years have been incredible for Sony, as PlayStation 5 has consistently topped the global sales charts since its release. Over 61 million PS5 consoles have been shipped as of August 2024.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s fiscal reports suggest Xbox sales continue to dip by an even greater amount, even as its software is seeing an uptick due to the popularity of Game Pass.

Due to the failure of gaming hardware, Microsoft has already shifted its focus towards lucrative software and Game Pass services. The company even went as far as to acknowledge that it had lost the console wars against Sony and Nintendo when it acquired Activision Blizzard.

Sony has been on a roll over the past few months. The company is pushing to secure exclusive marketing rights for the upcoming GTA 6. Not only that, it’s even looking to add a brand-new Batman exclusive by Rocksteady to its catalog

When you add these things to its plans for remastering various games, it’s quite clear why PS5 has managed to wreck its competitors in console wars.

The Japanese giant’s upgraded PS5 Pro will likely continue to dominate the trend over Series S/X consoles when it hits the shelves on November 7th,2024. It’s sad to see Microsoft struggling this badly, but the company is to be blamed for the mess it has created with Xbox.
