Space Marine 2’s Embarrassing Issue Had Higher-Ups Fearing A Level That Looked Like An Average Roblox Mini-Game

With more than 12 years passing between the debut of the original Warhammer 40k: Space Marine and its sequel, Space Marine 2, fans were rightfully concerned about the new game’s standard, as it was in the hands of a different studio. Thankfully, the worries seem to be unfounded, but Space Marine 2 has absolutely smashed it!

The brand-new game is the biggest opener for the Warhammer 40k franchise and is selling like hot pancakes. Its success can be attributed to developer Saber Interactive’s drive to push boundaries and pay close attention to detail. However, the studio agrees that if it hadn’t made a crucial addition to a level in the game, it would’ve been a complete disaster.

Space Marine 2 Almost Abandoned This Detail Dawn’s Descent

If you’re unaware, the Dawn’s Descent level in Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is the sixth and final campaign in the game, with the ultimate showdown between the Ultramarines and the forces of Chaos. The level later reveals that the Chaos-engulfed planet Demerium is actually a Necron Tomb world.

This reveal was quite a notable moment for the fans of the franchise. However, you’ll be shocked to know that it almost didn’t make it to the final build of the title. In an interview, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick and game director Dmitriy Grigorenko revealed how they had to fight with the development team to feature this Necron reference, as it was viewed as excessive.

“It would be fair to say that Dmitriy and I had to fight quite a lot for that to be in there, because there was a concern raised by one group at one point that we were putting too much into the game. It was almost becoming a kind of 40k fancy dress party in their mind.

The directors believed that this nod to Warhammer 40k’s vast and ancient lore would play into enriching the game’s atmosphere and highlight the stakes. Clearly, their efforts paid off as these subtle additions to the final level of the game made it an incredible experience.

It’s these efforts that allowed Space Marine 2 to become a generational hit and a worthy rival for Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2. With a packed post-launch content roadmap, the developers are ready to carry forward the momentum and truly give us an game that’ll go down in history.

Following its phenomenal debut on September 9th, 2024, Space Marine 2 has become the talk of the town in the gaming community. It has reached the highest player count ever recorded for the franchise on Steam. The developers want to ride on this wave and have promised a bunch of new additions to keep us coming back for more.

According to the game’s one-year plan, it’s going to receive four exciting seasons spread across 2024 and 2025. The first one will launch with PvE lobbies, ultrawide support, and the much-awaited Battle Barging.

The rest of the seasons for the game will follow a similar direction, bringing new missions, weapons, game modes, and other content for absolutely free. Players who buy Season Pass will also get exclusive content.

The game’s success has already led to Saber Interactive discussing plans for a potential sequel. Let’s hope it picks up the storyline of Henry Cavill’s favorite Chapter.
