2 dead when chase ends in crash

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people were killed in a crash after leading a Holland police officer on a chase early Sunday, police say.

Around 2:24 a.m., the officer was called to a Speedway gas station on Washington Avenue at 33rd Street on a report of a fight involving “several” people, the Holland Police Department of Public Safety says.

As the officer arrived, he saw a car leaving the gas station parking lot headed west on 33rd. Around the same time, police said, there was a sound of gunshots apparently coming from the car.

The officer chased the car, following it onto 32nd Street, where it continued going west. Police said it was going at a “high rate of speed” and its headlights were off.

As the vehicle continued west of the city limits, the driver lost control on the curve on 32nd near South Shore Drive curve, police said. The car hit a tree. The driver and passenger were killed, police said. Their names were not released later Sunday morning.
