How to Start Ship Customization

With a massive galaxy to explore, a well-equipped ship is one of the most important things players will need to move through Starfield‘s universe. This game requires a well-equipped spaceship, which is expensive, but necessary for exploring many beautiful planets.

When building a ship, there are many factors to consider, but one of the most critical is having certain skills to access better levels of customization and equipment. This is a guide on how to start customizing your ship in Starfield. To have a great ship, you will need certain skills.

How to Start Customizing Your Ship in Starfield

The ship is one of the most important parts of Starfield.

Once you finish the intro in Starfield, customizing your character and being completely free to make any decisions, you’ll find yourself in New Atlantis. You can then start interacting with the people there.

Gradually, you’ll begin working your way towards unlocking the skills necessary to fly and customize all aspects of a ship. The skill tree has several essential branches that are crucial for accessing all the customization options available.

These skills are practically indispensable when it comes to personalizing your ship and exploring space with maximum power and options.

Without developing these skills in the technology branch of the skill tree, the options for piloting and customizing your ship will be more limited, which means its size won’t be large enough. You can apply this to any skills and features you wish to enhance in the game.

Requirements to Start Customizing

Piloting is a MUST-have skill to be able to pilot every ship.

Aside from the fact that you’ll need a large number of credits and materials to have a decent ship in Starfield, you should first focus on which skills to develop to get the best ship possible.

First, to pilot B-class ships and above, you need to unlock the piloting skill in the technology skill tree at rank 4. Once you’ve developed it to this point, you’ll be able to pilot almost any ship that exists.

It’s important to note that you should first decide which class and type of ship you want to pilot to make reaching rank 4 worthwhile. If you don’t want to pilot that type of ship, then it’s not worth it.

To continue unlocking more customization options for your ship, you must also unlock the Starship Design skill in the technology tree at the highest possible rank. This allows you to install experimental modifications on your ship.

You’ll Need a Small Fortune to Have a Good Ship in Starfield

Starfield ship customization can be found in every vendor in any major planet.

You’ll need credits to do anything you want to build or modify in the game. In Starfield, a suitable starting point for customizing and building your dream ship is around 100,000 credits.

This will cover most of the costs, from cargo containers to thrusters and other essential features for your ship’s ideal performance. Reaching this amount won’t be easy, but to get a head start, you can steal a ship and then complete various missions to accumulate credits.

Fortunately, the game allows you to board other ships, whether allied or enemy, and steal them quickly.

Tip

You can then register these stolen ships, though registering them also comes with a cost—albeit much less than building a ship from scratch.

Once you’ve started accumulating credits and materials to build a ship from scratch, several factors will determine the class and magnitude of the ship you want to create. One of the most important will be the reactor.

The Reactor Is the Heart of the Ship

The reactor is the main part of the ship in Starfield.

Starting from scratch at any ship vendor in the galaxy, you’ll need to check the reactor first when customizing. The reactor will serve as a guide to determine what class of ship you’ll have.

This means it will dictate the ship’s capabilities when traveling through the galaxy, such as how much weight it can carry and how fast it can go, among other characteristics necessary for navigating the universe.

When building a ship in Starfield, one of the most indispensable factors to keep in mind is its mass. Since this is a space exploration game, the amount of mass your ship can carry is crucial, so you don’t have to constantly return to a planet to resupply.

Class C ships can carry the most mass, which is why it’s significant to upgrade your piloting skill. Any aesthetic additions to the ship won’t add much to its mass. However, crucial components like reactors or additional thrusters will significantly increase the ship’s total mass.

Mobility Isn’t Everything

You should focus on mass for your ship instead of speed.

Focusing on a ship that can carry a lot of mass will obviously make it slower, but at the same time, due to the game’s combat system which automatically locks onto targets, having high mobility isn’t as necessary. It’s influential to note that this aspect will depend on how you want to play Starfield.

You’ll need to decide whether you want to move quickly or carry large amounts of mass from one planet to another. Carrying a large quantity of materials will be essential for building better items in the game.

That’s why it’s recommended to focus on maximizing the amount of mass your ship can carry to ensure you have an unlimited supply of materials to use.

You can select all these options from the ship layout, with each tab displaying the various components you can incorporate into the ship. At all times, you’ll also see the ship’s current characteristics, allowing you to determine whether it will be simple to fly or not.
