The game is set between the original narratives of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Indy embarks upon a journey to find the mysteries of the Great Circle. By the looks of the game, it has great potential to be a huge success, and the credit goes to one Indiana Jones movie.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the most successful movies of the Indiana Jones franchise. Released in 1981, this film raked in a gigantic collection of over $350 million at the box office.

Now, this movie is going to be a serious reference for the upcoming Indiana Jones game. Talking about Raider of the Lost Ark, this is what the creative director of the upcoming game, Axel Torvenius, had to say (via The Guardian):

Making sure that this feels like Indiana Jones has really been the biggest thing with this project. Raiders to us is the most iconic representation of Indiana Jones, the first that the world came to love. So, it felt very natural to keep that as our main reference.

The game will be set a year after the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. This game is typically a globe-trotting adventure, where Indy starts his journey of finding the missing artefact from Connecticut in 1937 before sneaking through the Vatican, exploring Shanghai, climbing the Himalayas, and all the way to Thailand’s Sukhothai temples.

The upcoming game is one of the most ambitious projects of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus famed studio, MachineGames. The development team had the opportunity to work closely with Lucasfilm Games and access a trove of previously unseen material.

Torvenius gained access to old and rare material, which will be implemented in the upcoming game. Talking about the game, the design director Jens Andersson has high hopes:

Working on this game … It’s been a childhood dream. It’s just one of those [properties] that you think you will never get the opportunity to work on. We want to create the feeling of not just playing Indiana Jones, but being Indiana Jones.

Naturally, the primary mission of The Great Circle will be a cinematic, linear story, but there are also open regions for players to explore at their own pace. Many individuals and diversions will open up as Indy meanders around a busy Middle Eastern bazaar.

Looking for sidequests and spending the time to explore will earn adventure points that allow players to unlock additional skills of their choice. Certain optional moments are reminiscent of the classic LucasArts adventure games, as they are intended to challenge your ability to solve puzzles.
