Picking a better weapon can make the difference between completing or failing a mission. So every Helldivers need to be very picky about their choice and pick the best possible option for themselves. In Helldivers 2, players have a vast array of weaponry to pick from, sometimes making it very difficult to identify the best options. It seems this is what’s happening with Dominator and Slugger, as they both are quite similar but have their own advantages.

Even though the Jar-5 Dominator has poor handling, due to its insanely high damage output and Medium armor penetration, coupled with the higher ability to stagger enemies, it is a great weapon to pick to create chaos on the battlefield. With few perks and equipping the necessary gear like peak physic armor, or engineer armor, it can overcome those minor hiccups and destroy the enemies.

In contrast, the SG-8S Slugger was a very good weapon, but due to balance changes, its value has decreased, the reason the debate has started. Besides the ammo capacity advantage, Slugger has a lower value than Dominator in almost everything if players are looking at the stats. But stats don’t always show the full picture, as Slugger has better scope and better handling, making it stay in contention.

Dominator or Slugger: Which Weapon to Choose?

Even though Dominator deals greater damage and has more stagger, its handling is making it take a loss against Slugger. The reason is that Helldivers 2 is a fast-paced and chaotic game where enemies can sneak attack players or swarm them, so players need to be ready to respond at any moment.

The Dominator has the capacity to kill mobs in one shot, but what if you miss? Due to its hard handling even with peak physical armor perk, it is rough to use. In contrast, Slugger may deal less damage and has less stagger, it can rapidly fire shot enemies with great precision (at close to mid-range). With its one-bullet reload animation, players can reload the weapon (in between shots) and don’t need to wait to reload for very long.

That said, the Slugger’s effectiveness diminishes at longer ranges (it is a shotgun), requiring players to close the gap and put themselves at risk. However, this is a team game and also players have various stratagems and their team to support them and fill the small gaps that Slugger is creating.
