How To Respec Your Character

Skill might be everything in Elden Ring, but your character’s build undoubtedly plays a critical role in how well you can handle everything the game throws at you. What you lack in skill is something your build can make up for.

Earlier in the game, players tend to put their stats into what they might think to be the time. As you change weapons or find other playstyles you enjoy, you might find that your current stat distribution just isn’t working out. In that case, knowing how to respec your character is pretty important.

In this Elden Ring guide, we’ll show you how to unlock the ability to respec, where to find the items needed, and offer tips to make the process as smooth as possible.

How to Respec Your Character in Elden Ring

Once you defeat Rennala, she’ll be your go-to NPC to respec.

To unlock the ability to respec your character in Elden Ring, you’ll first need to take down a significant early-game boss: Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.

She’s the second major boss you’ll encounter, located within the Raya Lucaria Academy, which sits in the middle of Liurnia of the Lakes.

Be prepared for a challenging battle, though. The first phase requires you to kill a glowing individual among a group of scholars, while the second phase becomes a more traditional fight with Rennala’s magical power on display.

If you’re having trouble, check out our guide which goes in-depth on how to deal with Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. After her defeat, Rennala becomes a non-hostile NPC and sets up shop at the Raya Lucaria Grand Library Site of Grace. From this point on, you can visit her any time to respec your character.

Tip

Note that you must use every single point, you cannot ‘de-level’ your character.

Simple talk to her, choose the ‘Rebirth‘ option, and allocate all your points into the stats you want.

Where to Get Larval Tears in Elden Ring

Liurnia of the Lakes has many Larval Tears you can grab to respec quickly.

Larval Tears are the key ingredient to the respec process. Each time you respec, you’ll need to spend one.

They’re not exactly easy to come by unless you make it a point to explore every single corner of the game’s already gigantic map. There’s a limited number available, but there’s enough to comfortably respect more than a few times.

Tip

Larval Tears are only consumed when you actually
respec, so don’t worry if you enter the respec menu and decide to back out.

Here’s a couple that you can find in Liurnia of the Lakes to let you give the respect process a go fairly early on.

  1. One can be found in the graveyard at the Village of the Albinaurics.
  2. Another Larval Tear is dropped by a Grafted Scion posing as a Giant Crayfish near the gazebo between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack. There are a few Crayfish here, but the disguised Scion is the one patrolling the area, so you’ll know which one to take down.
  3. For those willing to take on tougher challenges, there’s a Larval Tear located in a graveyard east of Caria Manor, but it’s locked behind the Royal Knight Loretta boss fight. Once you defeat Loretta, you can reach the graveyard by following the Resurrection Painting quest. There, you’ll find a ghost sitting on a chair. Touch the ghost to reveal the Larval Tear.
  4. You can purchase one from Pidia, Carian Servant for 3,000 runes. Pidia becomes available after you defeat Royal Knight Loretta, and you’ll have to jump off the cliffs in the Three Sisters sub-area to access this merchant.

Respeccing is a fun mechanic in Elden Ring that gives you a lot more flexibility with adapting your build to your playstyle rather than being forced to stick to one throughout the game. It’s a luxury that fans of some other FromSoftware games never had.

Thanks to the power of Larval Tears, whether you’re diving into Elden Ring multiplayer or taking on the bosses that you can’t beat with your current build, the limitations of your power rest in your hands. Knowing how to adjust your stats can make all the difference.

That’s it for this guide. For more Elden Ring help, you can check out our other guides.
