A Thrilling Blend of Bioshock and Dead Space According To Fans
If you thought the horror gaming genre was going to slow down after the Silent Hill 2 remake and Alan Wake 2‘s new DLC, you’d be happy to be wrong. Bloober Team is hot off the success of the SH2 remake and has just revealed Cronos: The New Dawn.
The revealed third-person sci-fi survival horror is set for a 2025 release and has already been compared to Dead Space and Bioshock. Many fans are looking to Cronos to fill the void, especially with EA placing future Dead Space projects on hold.
Cronos: The New Dawn Looks A Lot Like Our Favorite Titles
Bloober Team has been riding high on the success of the Silent Hill 2 remake, which surpassed one million sales just days after its release in October 2024. This success is crucial as the studio pivots from revisiting classic franchises to developing its original sci-fi horror IP with Cronos: The New Dawn.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the game’s grim world blends Eastern European brutalism with retro-futurist technology and a visually striking and eerie setting. Players will navigate the wastelands of 1980s Poland as the Traveler, tasked with time-traveling to save key figures from a past apocalypse.
Cronos looks like more than just a spiritual successor to Dead Space though. It should bring its own flair to the genre. The game’s time-travelling plot, if down well could turn out to be really good. As one commenter on Instagram noted, “Close enough. Welcome Dead Space 4.“
The Traveler is not just fighting for survival but is also on a mission to extract the “Essences” of key figures from history, using a device called the Harvester. At times his weapon looked similar to the Plasma Cutter from Dead Space.
Bloober is Moving On From Silent Hill 2 To New Ventures
The cinematic trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn was revealed during the Xbox Partner Preview. It gave fans a first glimpse of the Traveler battling grotesque enemies in a dystopian future.
The trailer’s eerie atmosphere and retro-futurist setting immediately drew comparisons to Bioshock, while the combat that was shown was compared to Dead Space 4.

The choice of 1980s Poland as a setting in the game is also a point of interest. It suggests that Cronos will explore both historical and futuristic themes in its story. The concept of time travel, combined with that of a post-apocalyptic future is one that audiences love.
This mix of eras, combined with the philosophical undertones hinted at in the game’s premise, suggests that Cronos could explore existential themes about humanity’s future, much like Bioshock did with its socio-political commentary.

The decision to create an original IP after the success of the SH 2 Remake speaks to Bloober Team’s growing ambition. Silent Hill 2 was a remake that stayed true to its original source material, but with this new project, the devs are looking to make something unique to themselves.
Bloober’s CEO, Piotr Babieno noted that the game represents the next step in the team’s creative evolution. It will combine the eerie atmospheres of their previous work with more dynamic, action-oriented gameplay.
