Father And Son Hear Neighbor’s Shouts, Find Him Trapped In 30-Foot-Deep Well

A Maryland man was rescued on Wednesday after spending the night at the bottom of a well, thanks to neighbors hearing his pleas for help.

The rescued man, whose name has not been released, had serious injuries after falling 30 feet into the well in Catonsville, the Baltimore County Fire Department said on Facebook.

Neighbor Wesley Straffin told local news station WBAL that he went outside to get his dogs from the backyard when he “heard some dude calling for help.”

Straffin went to get his father, Matt Straffin, to help figure out what to do.

“We started to call out hello, hello, because we couldn’t tell where it was coming from,” Matt Straffin told WBAL. “And he started replying. He said, ‘Help, help. Hello.’ And it turns out it was our neighbor right behind us who had fallen into a well.”

The neighbors called 911 and were able to get some water to the trapped man in the meantime.

The man had fallen into the well at the previous afternoon, fire department spokesperson Travis Francis told People. From inside the well, the man said he saw it getting dark outside, then watched the light return the next day.

“That’s when he knew a day had passed for help,” Francis said.

Matt Straffin told WBAL he suspects the man didn’t know the well was even there. Footage of the scene from the news outlet does not show any markings that would have indicated the presence of a well.

“Looked like the ground just gave way,” Straffin said. “It was about a two-and-a-half-foot-wide hole.”
